Is America a "nation"? Nope. George Packer at The Atlantic identifies four American political cultures that he thinks are nearly irreconcilable. He doesn't believe in an amicable divorce, but he wonders how America is going to move forward--when we spring from the same headwaters--if we can't get along. Packer is living in a Lincolnian nationalist dream, and to him, the only path forward is a reconciled "nation." He builds his case on the anomaly of twenty year period after World War II.
