Can help the startup avoid major challenges and disasters based on poor decisions.  Can protect the investment by helping negotiate the terms and provide follow-on oversight. Can identify poor decisions and take steps to correct them. Successful startup investments come from a strong team, proper mentorship, and sufficient funding.  The lead investor is in a key position to provide these elements to the startup.
