means almost nothing; a very small amount of something, whether it be money, effort, or some other resource.
Examples:
1- Vincent van Gogh sold next to nothing during his lifetime, yet his work became priceless after his death.
2- Nikola Tesla arrived in the United States with next to nothing but his ideas, yet he became one of the greatest inventors of all time.
