On this Album Dive episode, I’m joined by rising modern blues artist Sonny Gullage to explore the stories behind several standout tracks from his debut album Go Be Free, released on the legendary Blind Pig Records.

We discuss Sonny’s journey from American Idol Season 20 to the blues spotlight, as well as his deep musical roots—including his family connection to blues and folk icon Lead Belly (Huddie Ledbetter), and the rich musical legacy of his family: Sister Alberta Gullage’s 1960s gospel recordings for Wajo Records, and his father Tony Gullage’s work as a bassist with Dr. John, Henry Butler, and other New Orleans legends.

Sonny also shares what it was like collaborating with Grammy-winning producer and songwriter Tom Hambridge, recording with modern blues phenom Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, and the biggest lessons he’s taken from the creation of Go Be Free.
