Episode 51: Why You Always Have To Pee When You Get Home - Latchkey Incontinence Explained
Description
If you ever find yourself doing a “pee dance” the second you get home and stressing about peeing your pants before you make it to the toilet, this episode is for you. In Episode 51 of the Not Your Mother's Pelvic Floor Podcast, Aliya explains latchkey incontinence or key-in-the-door syndrome - a type of urge incontinence (or a loss of bladder control that happens when we get an urge to pee). She explains why we get strong, sudden, and often uncontrollable urges to pee the moment we return home, put our key in the door, or pull into our garage and how these types of triggers are formed to disrupt the communication between the brain and the bladder.
Listen along to learn as she explains:
- how the bladder, brain, and pelvic floor muscles typically communicate when your bladder is full enough and needs to be emptied
- how and why this communication can breakdown and what happens when it does
- why it’s so common for us to get an overwhelming urge to pee when we return home at the end of the day
- the role of the nervous system in urge incontinence
- the exact steps you need to follow in order to have better control of your bladder when you experience those sudden + overwhelming urges
Aliya mentioned other episodes that will be helpful to listen to. Episode 27 is all about Your Breath and Your Pelvic Floor and Episode 7 is all about 10 Tips for Better Bladder Control.
