שמו של החודש הוא "מנחם אב", והיינו שבכל החודש, ומתחילתו, ישנו כבר ה"מנחם" של ענינים הבלתי-רצויים של חודש זה. וזה מודגש ביותר בזמננו "אַז ס'קרוב זמן הגאולה, ביז וואַנעט אַז מ'דאַרף דאָס זאָגן בדיבור, וואָס איז . . דאָך מגלה און מכריז און מודיע בכל מקום אַז ס'איז דער צייט וואָס ס'הויבט זיך אָן "מנחם""; מעלת קביעות שנה זו שהיא שנת העיבור, והיינו שניתוסף חודש שלם בעניני תומ"צ, שעי"ז, ביטול הסיבה ד"מפני חטאינו", מתבטל המסובב ד"גלינו מארצנו", ופועלים הענין ד"והפכתי אבלם לששון"; אע"פ שבזמן ד"בין המצרים" צריך למעט בשמחה אבל השמחה שע"י לימוד התורה ("פקודי ה' ישרים משמחי לב") הוא חיוב, ובפרט בזמן זה שיש "להתייגע" במיוחד בענין הגאולה, הרי "ציון במשפט (תורה) תפדה ושבי' בצדקה (שכולל כל המצוות)", ויש לעשותם מתוך שמחה.

The name of the month is “Menachem-Av,” meaning that the entire month, from its beginning, already offers the “Menachem” (consolation) for the undesirable aspects of the month. This is especially emphasized in our time, when the Redemption is near, to the point that it must be clearly verbalized, which reveals and proclaims and announces everywhere that the time of “Menachem” is beginning. This year is also a leap year, which brings an additional entire month of Torah and mitzvos, thus nullifying “our sins” and thereby nullifying the result of our sins, namely, the fact that “we were exiled from our land,” and thus turning “their mourning into gladness.” Although joy is supposed to be diminished during the Three Weeks, however the joy derived from Torah study (“The orders of Hashem are upright, causing the heart to rejoice”) is a requirement, especially now when it’s necessary to exert special effort for the Redemption, as “Tzion shall be redeemed through justice (Torah) and those who return to it with tzedakah (which encompasses all the mitzvos)” and this should be done with joy.
