Ep 63 - The Emotional Toll of Diabetes on Families, with Alyson Small

Season 2 Episode 63 Published 2 years, 1 month ago
Description

Welcome to today's episode of "Type 1 in Midlife and Beyond." Today, we explore the impact of type 1 diabetes on family relationships. Our guest is Alyson Small, whose mom was diagnosed with T1D when she was just 7 years old. Alyson is a registered dietitian who helps women achieve a sustainable weight loss of 10 pounds or more without diet rules or an "all or nothing" mindset. Today she shares her experiences growing up with a parent frequently dealing with lows and unawareness, highlighting the importance of love, communication, and empathy in the family.

Alyson will share her story and the lessons she's learned. It's valuable to hear from someone who has lived alongside a person with type 1 diabetes. We'll discuss the fears and challenges that diabetes brings to families and how education can help.

Alyson will also talk about what she might have done differently and how her journey shaped her life and career. My daughter Sarah often felt like a burden because of the situations she had to help me through, but it inspired her to become a nurse. Alyson, now a registered dietitian, will discuss whether she gives her mom food advice and how receptive her mom is to it. We'll also touch on how to handle well-meaning but sometimes overbearing advice from others about our diet.

We'll explore how concerns and worries change when we move out and live separately from our parents, and how that distance can alter relationships. Alyson will speak as a loving daughter on respecting boundaries and maintaining respect for a parent. Finally, she'll offer advice for herself and others in similar situations.

I am sure this conversation will resonate with you, and you'll walk away with tips on navigating family relationships while managing type 1 diabetes.
