The Statue of Liberty is a famous American landmark on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, symbolizing freedom and friendship. It depicts a woman holding a torch and a tablet with the date July 4, 1776.
History: The statue was a gift from France to celebrate 100 years of American independence. Suggested by Édouard de Laboulaye and designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi.
Construction: The copper statue was assembled on a framework by Gustave Eiffel.
