Prepare, Prepare, Prepare

“Spectacular achievement is always preceded by unspectacular preparation.” - Robert H. Schuller

My father used to keep a pretty big garden, much bigger than my mother would have preferred. Because when the harvest time came, we always had way more food than we could almost give away much less eat.

The harvest was pretty spectacular. What was not spectacular was preparing that fertile but hard, hard Nebraska soil for a garden. It wasn’t particularly fun to plant straight rows, and keep all the birds and critters away.  I didn’t particularly appreciate taking my turn to water. Wasn’t interested in pulling the  weeds either. But the harvest, that was spectacular. The work leading up to it, not so much.

Whatever it is we want to do, whatever it is we want to be, we have to put in  work. I am talking about practice. This true in theater. It’s true in sports, in every human endeavor. Even in retail sales, the axiom is that you don’t practice with your paycheck. You prepare yourself and the store long before the customer ever comes in.

Prepare, prepare, prepare.
