EPISODE 192 DETAILS WORKING CATTLE WITH DOGS. Training Your Dogs To Work Cattle IntroductionI have been training dogs to work cattle for most of my life. Growing up on a cow/calf operation, good dogs were essential.
Getting StartedWhile a round pen is nice, it's not necessary. Using sheep or calves initially can help lay a foundation for your dog.
Teaching Your Dog To Shed CattleTo sort cattle from a large herd, your dog needs to learn to “shed.” This requires patience, as dogs may initially feel out of control.
Shedding Exercise Steps- Start with Calves: Place calves between you and your dog.
- Use the Fence: Back against the fence, letting calves string out.
- Create a Break: Use a cattle stick to split the group.
- Call Your Dog: Bring your dog to the head of the sorted calves.
- Assign a Job: Move the sorted calves away, giving your dog a task.
Dogs should be more aggressive with rougher cattle and gentler with quieter ones. If your dog is reluctant to work, you may be correcting too harshly.
Understanding BehaviorBoth dogs and livestock have a “bubble.” Encourage your dog to find it for easier movement of cows and calves.
Pre-Training ImportanceTrain your dog before taking them to work to reduce mishaps and make tasks easier.
By following these steps, you can effectively train your dog to work cattle.
