Supernatural: The Man Who Knew Too Much (6x22) | Recap & Lore

Season 6 Episode 22 Published 2 years, 4 months ago
Description

Supernatural Season 6, Episode 22, The Man Who Knew Too Much recap 🧩 It's part two of the season six finale! (Fun fact: both parts aired on the same night.) Sam wakes up on a park bench with no idea who he is, and while he pieces his shattered mind back together, Dean and Bobby race to stop Cas and Crowley from opening Purgatory, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

Picking up right after Let It Bleed, Sam is on the run from the cops in a world that isn't quite real, ducks into a bar, and gets help from a bartender who insists on tagging along. His motel room is very A Beautiful Mind meets Se7en, and his fake IDs (Jimmy Page, Angus Young) aren't helping. Meanwhile, in the real world, Sam is unconscious in Bobby's panic room, Bobby has a heartbreaking goodbye, and Balthazar (Sebastian Roché) finally shows up with the location of the ritual. Dean and Bobby have no plan whatsoever. They're going anyway.

Episode Highlights:

  • Amnesiac Sam knocking out two cops and not knowing why
  • The bartender assuming Sam's a hooker (pay by the hour, anyone?)
  • Dr. Visyak (Kim Johnston Ulrich) and Bobby, and an apology that broke our hearts
  • Sam vs. soulless Sam vs. hell Sam (we wish he'd embraced them instead of killing them)
  • That gorgeous panning shot of soulless Sam hiding behind a tree
  • Crowley's blood smoothie (we were SO sure he was going to drink it)
  • A Judas in the angel ranks (still mad we didn't get Balthazar's burned wings)
  • Dean: is that a T. rex? (Jurassic Park puddle and all), and then the demons flip the Impala
  • Cas, a jar of blood, and a VERY big entrance

In the lore segment, we pick up where our H.P. Lovecraft lore left off and dig into Cthulhu, introduced in The Call of Cthulhu in Weird Tales in 1928: the octopus-headed, winged priest of the Old Ones, so terrible to behold that it destroys your sanity, dreaming in the sunken city of R'lyeh, and how writer August Derleth expanded Lovecraft's universe into the Cthulhu Mythos, inspiring movies, video games, South Park, and even Metallica.

Cas: "You can't imagine what it's like. They're all inside me. Millions upon millions of souls."
Crowley: "Sounds sexy."

Your turn, hunters: Should Sam have embraced his fractured selves instead of killing them? And how did THAT ending leave you?
