Supernatural: The Man Who Would Be King (6x20) | Recap & Lore

Season 6 Episode 20 Published 2 years, 4 months ago
Description

Supernatural Season 6, Episode 20, The Man Who Would Be King recap 👑 Ever wonder where our podcast's name comes from? It's THIS episode! Crowley calls the Winchesters "those denim-wrapped nightmares," and we've never looked back. Meanwhile, Cas tells the whole season from his point of view, straight to God and straight to the camera, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

Picking up after Mommy Dearest's big reveal, Cas fills in every gap we've been confused about all season: pulling Sam out of the cage (and leaving his soul behind by mistake), watching Dean play house, getting his ass kicked by Raphael, and the deal Crowley offered him in a very long line in hell. Meanwhile, Sam, Dean, and Bobby are closing in on Crowley, and Cas is listening to EVERYTHING.

Episode Highlights:

  • Dean and Cas's awkward car ride (it's date night)
  • Crowley's autopsy of Eve, eggs and all (caviar?)
  • Ellsworth (John Tench), the demon dispatcher: if Bobby Singer were a demon
  • Cas smiting two demons in a superhero pose
  • Cas giving himself away with one little Superman line (Dean's face!)
  • Cas trying to explain freedom to angels (like teaching a fish poetry)
  • Raphael (Demore Barnes) declaring he's God now, because it's what he wants
  • Crowley's tour of hell (it's a line) and his military portrait
  • Bobby's holy-fire ring, and Cas: Dean, it's not broken
  • Berly's headcanon: Cas saw Sam's big bear hugs, and that's why he went in for his own

In the lore segment, we dig into multiple heavens: the seven heavens of Mesopotamian religion, Judaism, and Islam, the Zohar's 390 heavens and 70,000 worlds, the ten heavens of 2 Enoch (each tied to a planet), the possible Zoroastrian influence, and how the word paradise comes from the Persian for an enclosed garden.

Cas: "Don't worry about the Winchesters."
Crowley: "Don't worry about... what, like Lucifer didn't worry? Or Michael, or Lilith, or Alastair, or Azazel didn't worry? Am I the only game piece on the board who doesn't underestimate those denim-wrapped nightmares?"

Your turn, hunters: Is Berly's hug headcanon right? And are you Team Cas or Team Dean right now? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.
