Season 4 Episode 36
Life Is Not Always Fair
“The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.” - from Ecclesiastes 9:11
Life is not always fair. We do not always get what we deserve. Sometimes not getting what we deserve is a good thing, but that’s a separate reflection. The point is that sometimes we do not reap what we sow.
Many in my faith tradition do not believe there is such a thing as luck. The writer of Ecclesiastes certainly believes there is, that time and chance in other words luck is part of life.
Here is the good part about that. A world in which everyone got exactly what they deserved would be a world where there would be very little gratitude, very little compassion, very little grace.
So let’s have gratitude for the all the good we have but we don’t fully deserve. Let us be compassionate with others in the hardship remembering it could easily have been us. Let us be generous in offering grace remembering the bad we deserved but didn’t experience.
Peace be with you.
