Throw Off That Yoke: A Father’s Blessing

On this particular Father’s Day, my mind goes back to the unusual blessing that Isaac gave his son Esau in Genesis 27. It’s a blessing I suspect all of us need.

Listeners  and readers not familiar with this story should know that the father Isaac had been fooled into giving Esau’s intended and rightful blessing to his twin brother Jacob and there was nothing he could do to make it right.

At this point Esau’s rightful anger, and bitterness, and spite had him under his brother’s yoke. His understanding of himself first and foremost as his brother’s victim would keep him a prisoner of that pain all of his life until he cast it off.

The blessing starts with a description of the current reality and ends with a challenge to Esau to liberate himself and move into a new reality; “…you will serve your brother. But when you grow restless, you will throw his yoke from off your neck.”

We must not allow ourselves to be defined by the negative things that happened to us. Sometimes we have to be the ones to free ourselves.
