Description
Supernatural Season 6, Episode 18, Frontierland recap 🤠It's the Supernatural Western episode! To kill Eve, the Mother of All, the boys need the ashes of a Phoenix, so Cas sends them back to Sunrise, Wyoming, in 1861, to find Samuel Colt, and Dean is living his BEST cowboy life, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
Hidden under Samuel Campbell's desk, the boys find a secret bunker full of books, including Samuel Colt's journal (Sam and Dean geeking out over it is adorable). Cas gives them 24 hours in the Old West, Dean goes all in on the costume (pearl snaps, a vest, a poncho, and a hat), and Sam begrudgingly puts on a Western shirt. Then reality hits: the saloon is empty, the whiskey tastes like gasoline, and a man named Elias Finch (Matthew John Armstrong) is hanged... and isn't staying dead.
Episode Highlights:
- Dean's Western fetish (Sam is not wrong), and his very sad saloon reality check
- A sarsaparilla for Sam (we had to look up what it even was)
- Dean introducing himself as U.S. Marshal Clint Eastwood
- Elkins the bartender (a callback to Dead Man's Blood)
- The judge burning to ash (great special effects)
- Cas running to Bobby's when he needs somewhere safe. Bobby: are we running or hiding?
- Samuel Colt (Sam Hennings, JT Brody from Walker, Texas Ranger) taking Sam's magic brick (a BlackBerry) and giving zero fucks
- Sam riding off on horseback, arm out for balance (we cackled)
- Elias Finch's outfit, and the sympathetic backstory that had us rooting for him
- Our verdict: we weren't expecting a Western to be this lighthearted, and it's one of our favorites of the season. Written by Andrew Dabb and Daniel Loflin and directed by Guy Bee.
In the lore segment, we dig into Phenex, the 37th of the 72 spirits of Solomon: a marquis of hell with 20 legions of demons, who appears as a phoenix bird, sings sweetly in a child's siren voice, speaks on all the sciences, delivers excellent poetry, and hopes to return to the Thrones in 1,200 years.
