Ύδωρ (edor) in ancient Greek meant ‘water’. In modern Greek, only the adjectives and some combined words remain intact. No verbs. In English however, the verb arrived shorty after  the French chemist Joseph Louis Proust coined the word in the 1880s, made from the Greek one and a French suffix. I guess before that the closest we had in English was ‘quench’ or ‘moist’ but feel free to send in any other words you might be aware of used in that time . ΥΔΩΡ/HYDRATE
