Supernatural: The French Mistake (6x15) | Recap & Lore

Season 6 Episode 15 Published 2 years, 5 months ago
Description

Supernatural Season 6, Episode 15, The French Mistake recap 🎬 Balthazar throws Sam and Dean through a window and into a world where they're Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, stars of a TV show called Supernatural, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. This is the most meta episode of TV we've EVER seen, and we loved every minute. (Fun fact: the title is a nod to the fourth-wall-breaking "French Mistake" musical number in Blazing Saddles.)

Balthazar (Sebastian Roché), deep V and all, explains heaven's war with Raphael via the plot of The Godfather, hands the boys a key, and sends them crashing through a window... onto a crash mat in Vancouver. Now Dean is Jensen, a former soap star with a toy helicopter and a fish tank in his trailer, and Sam is Jared, who lives in a mansion with a tanning bed, giant portraits of himself, and his wife, Genevieve Padalecki (Dean: Ruby?!). Meanwhile, Cas is just Misha Collins, a heaven-sent angel named Virgil has followed them through, and nobody on set can figure out why Jensen and Jared are suddenly getting along.

Episode Highlights:

  • Misha Collins (playing the douchiest possible version of himself), tweeting to his Misha-migos
  • The prop Impalas (Dean nearly vomits)
  • Jared's mansion, the cowboy portrait, and the camel (it's an alpaca)
  • Jensen's bad acting: chin down, eyes up. Jared's: if there's a key, there must be a lock. (LA's favorite scene!)
  • The strangest motel room set we've ever seen
  • Robert Singer: no poppers on set!
  • Misha's very high-pitched scream
  • Eric Kripke taking three shotgun blasts and still walking (should've been played by Rob Benedict!)
  • Serge the Sweetness, just casually dodging bullets
  • Written by Ben Edlund (no surprises there) and directed by Charles Beeson, this is a love letter to the cast, crew, and fans, and a show that's willing to make fun of itself. Plus, the freeze frame and cut to black payoff is perfect.

In the lore segment, we dig into parallel universes and reality slips, including the strange case of Lorena Garcia, who said she woke up one morning in 2008 to find her bedsheets, her job, and even her boyfriend changed.

Dean: "Why would anyone want to watch our lives?"
Sam: "According to the interviewer, not very many people do."
