Legends | Malcolm X on Injustice, Self-Defence and the Fight for Liberty
Published 2 years ago
Description
In 1964, Malcolm X drew a direct parallel between the American Revolution and the Civil Rights Movement — if the founding fathers had the right to defend liberty by force, so did African Americans facing systemic violence and government inaction. Reflecting on the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing and the four young girls killed in Birmingham, he made the case that self-defence is not radicalism. It is the oldest American principle. His words have not aged because the conditions that produced them have not fully changed.
