#50 The Love & Lessons in Loss: Stories about Staying in the Moment and Feeling Held with Hana Mari Mäkinen

Published 5 years ago
Description

This episode shares valuable life experiences for anyone grieving the loss of a loved one, pet, freedom or hope. One of the stories Hana shares here is an experience with her father, who was slowly slipping away due to alzheimer's (this is something I, too, am currently dealing with). Here is part of what Hana shared:

"All I had was each moment and conversation - in the now. And there were days when some of those nows were extremely painful, but I was like, I'll deal with my emotion after. I want to give him everything I've got because I want to literally savour this moment to the depths... to create a memory.

He and I would have conversations, and I was like, Oh! There's Dad! Oh, there's his alzheimer's. Oh, there's his spirit. And I would find ways to make him laugh. I just wanted to spend time with this man who was slipping away from me and treat him with love and respect."

Other topics discussed include:

  • Pet loss
  • Openly communicating about grief
  • What is grief
  • Ways to cope with loss
  • There is no wrong way to grieve
  • How to find the beauty and joy in grief
  • Considerations for those dealing with past trauma from loss of a loved one
  • Ways to cope with and support an aging loved one
