Supernatural: Like a Virgin (6x12) | Recap & Lore

Season 6 Episode 12 Published 2 years, 5 months ago
Description

Supernatural Season 6, Episode 12, Like a Virgin recap 🐉 Sam's soul is back, and so is our sweet, puppy-eyed Sammy, but he doesn't remember the last year and a half. Meanwhile, the boys hunt a string of disappearances where every victim is a young virgin, and the culprits are... dragons? On Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast, it's our midseason premiere (and a nod to Madonna)!

First, thank you for the lovely new reviews from Jelka (come say hi at a convention!) and PurpleIce90, who titled theirs Hey Assbutt and ranked us their second favorite Supernatural podcast (We get it... can't beat the first-hand experience from Rob and Rich). Then it's on to the episode: a small plane goes down in a storm over Oregon, the pilot is filleted, and his girlfriend Penny vanishes. Sam wakes up at Bobby's remembering nothing since the cage, while Dean, Bobby, and Cas try to keep his wall intact. The boys trace the disappearances to virgins, gold, and wings, and Bobby sends Dean to see an intriguing medieval studies expert, Dr. Visyak (Kim Johnston Ulrich), who has a sword in a stone and some stories we NEED to hear.

Episode Highlights:

  • Souled Sammy's big hugs (Bobby is NOT comfortable)
  • Our math: a year and a half in hell is 180 years (no wonder he needed a wall)
  • Sam googling virgins, gold, and wings... and landing on World of Warcraft
  • Dr. Visyak, the medieval studies bombshell who needs a spinoff
  • Dean trying to pull a sword from a stone, and then blowing up the stone
  • Sam scratching at the wall (DON'T SCRATCH THE WALL, SAM)
  • A spell from a book bound in human skin, and something rising from Purgatory
  • Our honest take: we were SO excited for dragons, but other than a flash of wing and some hot hands, they weren't very dragon-like. (Just give us some scales!)

In the lore segment, we dig into the origins of dragons: the lindworm legend of Klagenfurt, Austria, and how it evolved into a fire-breathing dragon by 1287, the 16th-century dragon skull that turned out to be a woolly mammoth, Herodotus' winged serpents, and Stanford historian Adrienne Mayor's theory in The First Fossil Hunters that ancient people imagined dragons after finding real fossils. (Can we Jurassic Park them back? Dragons would go better, right?)

Bobby: "They're not like the Loch Ness Monster, Dean. Dragons aren't real."
Dean: "Could you make a few calls?"
Bobby: "To who? Hogwarts?"

Your turn, hunters: Who wants a Dr. Visyak spinoff? And how do you feel about souled Sam being back? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (we might read yours on air!), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.
