Description
In this final episode of our "Good Question" series on the Holy Spirit, we trace the Spirit's activity in the ministry of Jesus and the early church.
Key points:
- John the Baptist foretold that Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:16)
- At Jesus' baptism, the Spirit descended on Him like a dove, and the Father affirmed Him (Luke 3:21-22)
- Jesus' ministry was empowered by the Spirit (Luke 4:14, 18)
- After His resurrection, Jesus instructed the disciples to wait for the promised Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5)
- On the day of Pentecost, the Spirit came upon the disciples, enabling them to speak in various languages (Acts 2:1-4)
- This event marked a new era of the Spirit's ministry, reversing the division of Babel (Genesis 11)
- The book of Acts records four key "Pentecost moments" where the Spirit fell on different groups
- Acts 2: The Spirit falls on the Jews
- Acts 8: The Spirit falls on the Samaritans (half Jewish, half Gentile)
- Acts 10: The Spirit falls on God-fearing Gentiles who had converted to Judaism
- Acts 19: The Spirit falls on Gentiles, demonstrating God's inclusive plan of salvation
- As followers of Christ, our lives are to be led by the Holy Spirit
- If we have put our faith in Jesus, the Spirit dwells within us
- We must learn to submit to and yield to the Spirit's leading
- As we do so, the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control) will grow in our lives
- Walking in the Spirit is key to our ongoing sanctification and growth in Christ
The Holy Spirit's ministry, which was active throughout Jesus' life and the birth of the church, continues today in the lives of all believers. May we increasingly open ourselves to His presence and power as He shapes us into the image of Christ.
Thank you for joining us on this journey of exploring the person and work of the Holy Spirit in this "Good Question" series. May the Spirit guide you into all truth and empower you for God's service.
