Take Heart and Overcome
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33
It’s important that we acknowledge the difficulties that we face. And we never want to underestimate the scale and scope of the challenges we face in order to get to the places we need to reach.
Nevertheless, we take heart in the witness and example of Jesus. He was born to a peasant family in the backwater of the Roman Empire. He was rejected by the religious establishment and executed by the occupying army. Yet he overcame the world.
Not even the threat of the cross could stop him in his mission nor could the grave silence his voice. His voice, as the hymn declares, speaks from eternity.
The civil rights activists of the 1950’s and 60’s- facing Jim Crow, facing beatings and arrests, facing the possibility of death sang, “We shall overcome. We shall overcome. We shall overcome someday.” Deep in their hearts the did believe that they would overcome. And they did.
Take heart and overcome. Peace be with you.
