Supernatural: Appointment In Samarra (6x11) | Recap & Lore

Season 6 Episode 11 Published 2 years, 5 months ago
Description

Supernatural Season 6, Episode 11, Appointment in Samarra recap đź’€ It's the season six midseason finale: Dean makes a deal with Death to get Sam's soul back, and the price is wearing Death's ring and doing his job for 24 hours. Meanwhile, Sam has his own plan, and it involves an axe, Bobby, and some Jack Torrance energy, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

Fun coincidence from Berly's research: the title comes from John O'Hara's 1934 novel, whose main character is named Julian English. And in this episode? Julian Richings plays Death, and Robert Englund plays Dr. Robert.

The episode opens with Dean visiting Dr. Robert (Robert Englund, Freddy Krueger himself, and Vecna's dad on Stranger Things), an old friend of John's with a 75% success rate at temporarily killing people. Dean dies on purpose, summons Tessa (Lindsey McKeon returns), and gets a meeting with Death (Julian Richings), who agrees to rescue Sam's soul from the cage, IF Dean can last a day as Death. Meanwhile, Sam does NOT want his soul back, and Balthazar (Sebastian Roché) has a solution: a spell that requires killing a father figure. Bobby, watch your back.

Episode Highlights:

  • Dr. Robert's adorable eyes, filthy lab coat, and zero gloves
  • Dean dying on purpose (and his shirt only getting lifted, again)
  • Tessa, annoyed to be summoned out of the Sudan
  • Death negotiating with Dean (and you know he's eating)
  • Dean choosing Sam over Adam without even thinking (poor Adam, we never forget)
  • Balthazar's deep V and dark spell
  • Bobby's trapdoor
  • Death's final warning: it's all about the souls (Purgatory, anyone?)

In the lore segment, we compare Supernatural's Reapers to the Grim Reaper lore we covered in Faith and dig into the Shinigami, the death gods of Japanese folklore: benevolent guides to the afterlife, less than 200 years old in Japanese culture, tied to the belief that every life is a burning candle, plus the darker Edo-era stories of tricksters and a man who tried to cheat death by turning a patient's bed around. (We'll never look at candles the same way.)

"I may have been born at night, boy, but it wasn't last night." – Bobby Singer
