Description
Supernatural Season 6, Episode 10, Caged Heat recap 🍕 Meg teams up with the Winchesters and Cas to storm Crowley's prison of monsters, Cas learns a few moves from an educational pizza man, and the Campbells' betrayal hits rock bottom, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
The episode opens with Crowley vs. Crowley: the real King of Hell (Mark Sheppard) interrogating the Alpha Shapeshifter (wearing his face) about Purgatory, before taking his head off and cracking the corniest one-liner ever, to an empty room. Meanwhile, the boys are delivering monsters to Crowley's men, getting tied up (again) by Meg (Rachel Miner), and agreeing to an uneasy alliance to take Crowley out. Sam summons Cas with a fake Raiders of the Lost Ark story, Grandpa Samuel reveals what Crowley promised him (Mary), and everyone heads to an abandoned prison full of monsters, demons, and hellhounds.
Episode Highlights:
- Crowley vs. Crowley: "oops, I lost my head" (who are you even talking to?)
- The demon who doesn't speak little bitch
- Sam luring Cas with the plot of Raiders of the Lost Ark (and Cas calling Sam boy)
- Cas, deeply invested in a porno about a pizza man and a babysitter (we're not supposed to talk about it)
- Fun fact: Jensen has said soulless Sam was his least favorite storyline, because he missed his brother
- The Cas and Meg kiss up against the wall (we rewound it three times)
- Our 41st blood splooge (we debated counting it twice)
- Sam's blood-and-maybe-poop devil's trap on the ceiling
- Our question: why are the women always naked on the torture table when the men stay clothed?
- Crowley, his bones, and Cas, who is NOT bluffing
The verdict: Brett Matthews and Jenny Klein gave us the pizza man payoff, but this wasn't one of director Robert Singer's most stylized episodes (we'll always have When the Levee Breaks and Monster Movie).
In the lore segment, we dig into the history of Purgatory: how it became a place, not just a condition, in the 12th century, according to Jacques Le Goff's The Birth of Purgatory, Robert Bellarmine's theory that it sits in the earth's interior, St. Patrick's Purgatory, a cave on Station Island in Lough Derg, Ireland, a 1345 fresco in Todi, Italy, showing its seven deadly sins, Dante's Purgatorio, and Pope John Paul II calling it a condition of existence in 1999.
"I learned that from the pizza man." – Castiel
