Description

Hello, and welcome to Your Greek Word On A Sunday, a weekly, bite-size podcast for anyone curious on language, etymology and connections. I am your host, Emmanuela Lia and wherever you are in the world, if you want to entertain your brain for a few minutes, this is the podcast for you. Let's Go!

Τιθημι(tithimi) is an Ancient Greek verb meaning ‘I place’ , ‘I position’. In combination with the preposition Aπό (apo) it means ‘I put away, I store, I safe keep’. The noun is αποθήκη (apothiki) and in modern Greek it still has the meaning the rest of the world dropped around the 14th century. A storage. Which was usually a cellar or a basement and made perfect conditions for medicine to be kept. So a person running a storage (in modern Greece) or  safe keeping medicine (in the English speaking world) is called ΑΠΟΘΗΚΑΡΙΟΣ/APOTHECARY
