Supernatural: Clap Your Hands If You Believe (6x09) | Recap & Lore

Season 6 Episode 9 Published 2 years, 5 months ago
Description

Supernatural Season 6, Episode 9, Clap Your Hands If You Believe recap 🛸 The episode opens as a straight-up X-Files tribute, complete with the theme song, people are vanishing in beams of light, and Dean gets abducted by "aliens"... who are definitely not aliens, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. (The title's a nod to Peter Pan. Clap if you believe in fairies!)

In Elwood, Indiana, a small town full of UFO sightings and crop circles, the boys start investigating disappearances. While Sam tails a suspect, Dean is chased through a cornfield by a bright light, yelling "close encounter!" on the phone, and gets beamed up. When he comes back, he's sure he's been taken, and does not want to hear any mention of the probing table. Then the boys meet Marion (Trish Allen), the town’s fairy expert, Mr. Brennan (Linden Banks), the town watchmaker with a suspicious cream habit, and a self-proclaimed UFO expert (Robert Picardo of Star Trek: Voyager) whose 30 years of research don’t impress Sam.

Episode Highlights:

  • The UFO enthusiasts' convention of conspiracy theories
  • Dean vs. a tiny Tinker Bell in the motel room, set to David Bowie’s Space Oddity (it ended in the microwave)
  • Fairy 101: they love cream, hate iron, and HAVE to count every grain of spilled salt or sugar
  • Marion's enchanted home full of fairies and gnomes
  • Robert Picardo, who we should have known would be important
  • The leprechaun in the red beanie
  • Ben Edlund’s writing and John F. Showalter’s direction: the camera work, the lighting, and the fairy-tale glow (chef’s kiss)

In the lore segment, we dig into the Tuatha Dé Danann, the divine race of Irish mythology, their four magical treasures (the Stone of Fál, the Dagda’s cauldron, Lugh’s spear, and Nuada’s sword), how they retreated underground to become the Aes Sídhe, or fairy folk, and Avalon, the legendary island of the fae.

Dean: "Close encounter! Close encounter!"
Sam: "Close encounter of what kind? First? Second?"
Dean: "They're after me!"
Sam: "Third kind already? You gotta run, man. The fourth kind's a butt thing."
Dean: "Empathy, Sam. Empathy."
