Our presenter, James Seghers, explains the priesthood and The Sacrament of Holy Orders in this episode of the Understanding Catholicism Series.

In the Old Testament, God created the covenant of marriage beginning with Adam and Eve. This union is also a metaphor that depicts God in a marital relationship with the human race. In the New Testament, Jesus’ first public sign that prompted the disciples to believe in his divinity was at a wedding feast at Cana. After the miracle Jesus performed, turning water into wine, Jesus was viewed as the bridegroom Messiah. Also, in the New Testament, Jesus is depicted as the heavenly husband, with Heaven being the eternal wedding supper of the Lamb with, and thus, Jesus with His bride, the church.

God created humans out of love and for love, and as such, God calls humans to love. The church teaches loving is the fundamental and innate vocation of every human. Church helps us develop a loving relationship with God to transform our lives, and the marriage union between a man and a woman calls each spouse to love one another as God loves us.

The sin of Adam and Eve ruptured God’s plan for marriage, and the original sin inclined married couples to dominate and control one another, causing discord.

“To the woman, he said: I will intensify your toil in childbearing; in pain — you shall bring forth children. Yet your urge shall be for your husband, who shall rule over you. To the man, he said: Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, you shall not eat from it; cursed is the ground because of you! In toil, you shall eat its yield all the days of your life.” (Genesis 3:16-17).

In addition to discussing the original intent for marriage and what matrimony became due to the fall of Adam and Eve, James Seghers also relays the blessed opportunities for those who overcome marital challenges, God’s view on divorce, and much more.
