In this episode of the Understanding Catholicism Series, our presenter, James Seghers, explains the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.

To receive the church’s Sacrament of Anointing the Sick through the ministry of a priest, there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death—a severe illness is sufficient. The hope is that the individual will be healed if it is God’s will. Without physical healing, the individual receives the Holy Spirit’s gift of peace and courage.

James continues to delve into how Jesus came to heal both the physical and spiritual. Jesus did not heal all people’s physical ailments, but the miraculous healings performed were to demonstrate the signs of the coming of the Kingdom.

Illnesses and suffering have always been among the most significant problems of human life. James discusses how enduring suffering matures a person by producing endurance, character, and hope and bringing one closer to God and how one can use their suffering as a redemptive suffering, uniting oneself with Jesus’ Passion.

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” (James 1:2-4)
