"החודש הזה לכם ראש חדשים ראשון הוא לכם לחדשי השנה". וצ"ל הטעם דבמנין החדשים חודש ניסן הוא ראש חדשים, ובמנין השנים חודש תשרי הוא ראש השנה. וביותר אינו מובן עפ"י מ"ש בת"י שלפני מ"ת הי' חודש תשרי (גם) חודש הראשון, וא"כ, מדוע זה נשתנה לאחר מ"ת? ובפרט שגם הגאולה ממצרים עצמה התחילה "בר"ה (כאשר) בטלה עבודה מאבותינו"? והביאור: ההבדל בין לפני מ"ת ללאחרי מ"ת הוא, דאף שלפני מ"ת הי' נראה ש"יש בעה"ב לבירה זו", אבל כ"ז הי' רק הגילוי דשם אלקים ועבודת הנבראים הגיעה רק עד שרש הנבראים, כי היתה ה"גזירה" ש"עליונים לא ירדו למטה וכו'", אבל במ"ת, כשנתבטלה הגזירה, הי' גילוי דשם הוי'. וזהו הבדל בין חודש תשרי, שאז (רק) "בטלה עבודה מאבותינו", בחי' סור מרע – שלימות העבודה כפי שהיא לאחר הצמצום (עד לשרש הנבראים), אבל הגאולה דחודש ניסן היא חירות לגמרי מכל הצמצומים. ולכן לפני מ"ת הי' חודש תשרי (שבו נברא העולם) "חודש הראשון", ולאחר מ"ת – חודש ניסן.

The verse states, “This month shall be to you the head of the months; it shall be to you the first of the months of the year.” Why is Nissan considered first in counting the months, while Tishrei is considered Rosh Hashanah with regard to years? Moreover, Targum Yonasan states that before the Torah was given, Tishrei was also the first month; so why did it change after the Torah was given? Especially considering that the first stage of the Exodus from Egypt itself began on Rosh Hashanah, when “our forefathers’ labor in Egypt ceased”? The explanation is: the difference between before and after the Torah was given is that, although it was evident even before the Torah was given that “This palace has a Master,” the revelation was only from name Elokim, and man’s service could only reach as high as the root of created beings – due to the decree that “The upper beings shall not descend below, etc.” However, when the Torah was given and the decree was nullified, the name Havayah was revealed. This is the difference between the months of Tishrei and Nissan: In Tishrei, “our forefathers’ labor in Egypt ceased” – but that’s only the level of “turning away from evil” – the highest level of service after the tzimtzum (which reaches up to the root of the created beings). But the redemption of the month of Nissan is one of complete freedom from all tzimtzum. Therefore, before the Torah was given, Tishrei (when the world was created) was “the first month,” and after the Torah was given it became the month of Nissan.
