פעם ביקש הבעש"ט מא' החסידים, יהודי פשוט, למסור פריסת-שלום ממנו לתלמידו באיזו עיירה שבדרך חזרתו מביקורו אצלו. כאשר הגיע לשם הפנו אותו בני העיירה למלמד א' בשם ר' בער [זה הי' הרב המגיד] שיושב באיזו חורבה בקצה העיירה ולומד עם ילדים קטנים. לאחרי שמסר לו הפריסת-שלום שאלו, היתכן שאיש קדוש וצדיק כמוהו חי בדחקות ועניות גדולה ביותר, שלא הי' לו אפי' כסא לשבת עליו... השיב לו המגיד, כמו אצלו בעצמו, ש"בבית" יש לו הכל..., אבל כשנמצא "בדרך", ב"אכסניא", לא איכפת לו לישב על חתיכת עץ בידעו ש"בבית" מוכן לו עושר מופלג. וזהו גם המענה להשואלים בנוגע לנשיא הדור ובכלל – היתכן שישנם ענינים המבלבלים לעבודה – עכשיו נמצאת הנשמה "בדרך", ומה שנוגע הוא – מילוי השליחות ד"אנן פעלי דיממא אנן" ולא התנאים והנוחיות; ולעת"ל תתגלה הכוונה הפנימית בכ"ז – "אודך ה' כי אנפת בי".

The Baal Shem Tov once asked one of his chassidim, a simple Jew, to send regards to his disciple (the Maggid of Mezritch) who lived in a town he would be passing through. When he arrived, the townspeople directed him to a teacher named R’ Ber, who was sitting in a small hovel at the edge of the town and teaching Torah to small children. After delivering regards from the Baal Shem Tov, the chassid asked the Maggid how such a holy and righteous man could live in such hardship and poverty, to the point that he didn’t even have a chair to sit on... The Maggid replied, just like you have all your fancy furniture at home, but don’t bring it along with you when you travel, I too, have everything at “home,” but when I “travel” (i.e., in this world), I don’t mind sitting on a tree stump because I know I have everything at home. And this is the answer to those who ask why there are all these distractions from Divine service – the answer is that we are currently “on the road,” and what matters now is not the comfort of the conditions in which we find ourselves, but fulfilling the mission – “we are day workers” – and in the future the inner purpose of it all will be revealed – “I will give thanks to You, Hashem, for You were angry with me…”.
