Help Carry the Cross

A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. -Mark 15:21

The work of redeeming the world requires our participation. We will let theologians and philosophers debate rather this is by design or by necessity. What we know is that each of us  must take our turn carrying the cross. Jesus describes it as a requirement of being one of his followers.

Not many of us rush out to carry the cross. Most of the time we are like Simon. He was on his way from somewhere else to somewhere else to do something else when the text says he was forced to carry the cross. No, not many of us get to pick our cross, or when we carry it.

When life compels us to serve, we get to determine the attitude and spirit with which we serve. Something about  the quality of Simon’s response to his being pressed into service inspired his sons to become leaders, inspired three of the gospel writers to include his story, and generations to follow his example.
