Synopsis
Parashas Tzav discusses the seven days of investiture, during which Moshe installed Aharon and his sons into the service of the Mishkan by dressing them in the priestly garments and anointing them, etc. The connection to Purim: the Midrash states that at his feast, Achashverosh wore the priestly garments. As the Tzemech Tzedek brings down, Achashverosh below reflects “Achashverosh” above – the “One to Whom end and beginning belong” (acharis v’reishis shelo); thus, Hashem, too wore the priestly garments! This reflects the two opposite interpretations of the words in the Megillah, “On that night…”: (1) “That night” represents a double concealment; it is not only “night,” but “that night”; (2) “That night” represents a level so lofty and hidden, that it transcends even the level of “He made darkness His hiding place”! And likewise, “the feast of that wicked one” is connected to “the feast” of the one “to Whom end and beginning belong.” Because through the service of transforming “willful transgressions into merits,” one reaches a higher level than through merits themselves. Similarly, the verse states, “I will surely hide My face on that day” – in the future tense: it is specifically our Divine service in the time of exile (when “I will surely hide”) that brings about the future Redemption. And this is also the idea of “And it was reversed etc.” The lesson is: Even someone who finds himself in a state of “that night” in a negative sense, can “reverse it”; indeed, this is precisely the way he will come to the level of “that night” in the positive sense.
