Season 2 Episode 44
“When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who was also a disciple of Jesus. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus; then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.” Matthew 27:57-58
When the Romans tortured and executed a person for insurrection- as they did with Jesus, those bodies were dishonored. Often the bodies were left on the cross to be eaten by the birds. Other times the bodies were unceremoniously dumped. A dignified burial that allowed the friends and the family to honor the deceased was not normally an option.
Unlike many of Jesus’s disciples, Joseph had money and access to power. Rather than hoarding his money and protecting his social status, he boldly came forward and claimed Jesus’s body. He exposed himself as a Jesus follower at a time most of the disciples were still in hiding.
Having access to money and power and social status can be a gift, but only if we use them to be blessing to others.
