בהתחלת ספרו פוסק הרמב"ם להלכה ש"יסוד היסודת ועמוד החכמות לידע שיש שם מצוי ראשון וכו'", ולא (רק) "להאמין" – שענין זה צריך לחדור בהבנה והשגה של שכל הגשמי הקשור עם הגוף ונפש הבהמית. ובריש הפרק שלאח"ז כותב "והיאך היא הדרך לאהבתו ויראתו, בשעה שיתבונן האדם . . לידע השם הגדול וכו'". שזהו כללות הענין ד"דע את אלקי אביך" ע"י לימוד פנימיות התורה באופן דהבנה והשגה. שזהו מעין המצב בביאת המשיח, וכמ"ש הרמב"ם בסיום ספרו שאז לא זו בלבד שבני האדם ("אתם קרויין אדם") "ישיגו דעת בוראם" באופן ד"כמים כים מכסים", אלא שגם "מלאה הארץ דעה את ה' כמים לים מכסים" – שאפי' ענינים ארציים יהיו חדורים בגילוי אלקות, וכמ"ש "ונגלה כבוד ה' וראו כל בשר וגו'" (וכמארז"ל ש"לעתיד לבוא אם אדם הולך ללקוט תאנה בשבת היא צווחת ואומרת שבת היום!"), ועי"ז דוקא נעשה "יתרון האור מן החושך".

At the beginning of his sefer, the Rambam establishes as a matter of law that “The foundation of all foundations and the pillar of wisdom is to know that there is a Primary Being etc.” – the obligation is not merely to “to believe” but “to know,” because this reality must permeate his physical understanding and comprehension in a way that relates to his body and animal soul. At the beginning of the next chapter he writes, “And what is the way to love Him and fear Him, when a person contemplates...to know the great Name etc.” This is the general idea of “Knowing the G-d of your father,” by studying the inner dimension of Torah in a manner of understanding and comprehension. This resembles the state of Moshiach, when, as the Rambam states at the end of his sefer, not only will people (“You are called Man”) “comprehend the knowledge of their Creator” “as the waters cover the sea,” but also “The earth will be filled with knowledge of G-d as waters cover the sea” – even materiality will be permeated with the revelation of G-dliness, as it is written, “The glory of Hashem will be revealed and all flesh will see etc.” (As our Sages taught, “In the future era, if a person goes to pick a fig on Shabbos, it will cry out and say, ‘It is Shabbos today!’”) It is specifically in this way that we reach “the advantage of light from the darkness.”
