Season 2 Episode 35
“I have heard their groans and sighs, and seen their tears, and I would give every drop of blood in my veins to free them.” -Harriet Tubman
One of the more surprising statements I’ve come across came from Tubman. She stated that she would not be surprised to see some slaveholders in heaven because some of them really didn’t know any better.
In that moment I came to see that all of Tubman’s bravery and commitment to justice was driven by her compassion for herself and for the still enslaved. She was not driven by anger and fear.
She was driven by a determination to see justice for the enslaved and not by a thirst for revenge and retribution. She claimed her own humanity. She did not deny the humanity of her oppressors.
James 1:20 says that human anger doesn’t produce the righteousness God desires. Tubman life shows us how being driven by compassion does.
