Be Compassionate with Yourself

Season 2 Episode 31

Send us a text

There can be no self-care without self-compassion, which is compassion turned inward. It is the ability to connect to our feelings, to respond to our suffering with kindness, and to desire that our suffering be ameliorated.
—Chanequa Walker-Barnes

The Biblical tradition assumes a healthy self center. The command to love one’s neighbor as one’s self has built into the presupposition that we know how to love ourselves.

Some of us need to learn how to care for ourselves. All of us at times need to focus on our own wellbeing. Just as it is not possible to pour from an empty vessel, it’s not possible for us to truly love others if we don’t love ourselves.

What does it mean for us to offer ourselves grace and forgiveness? What does it mean for us to show ourselves compassion? What does it look like for us to encourage ourselves and to celebrate our progress?

All of these things we are called to do for others, we are also called to do for ourselves.

I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
