בשיעור רמב"ם היומי מבאר חומר הענין דעדות שקר: א) "מאיימין עליהם בפני הכל, ומודיעין אותם כח עדות שקר, ובושת המעיד בה בעולם הזה ובעולם הבא", דלא מצינו זה בשאר איסורי התורה ואפי' באיסורי סקילה ב) "אמר לו בו ועמוד עם העד ולא תעיד כדי שיראה הלוה ויפחד ויעלה על דעתו שאתם שני עדים ויודה מעצמו הרי זה אסור . . ועל זה וכיוצא בזה נאמר מדבר שקר תרחק" - שהענין דעדות שקר הוא חמור כ"כ שאפי' להראות את עצמו כאילו הוא מעיד ועי"ז יכול להיות שהלוה יודה ויעשה תשובה - אסור!, והביאור: מכיון שכל ענינו של יהודי הוא להיות "אתם עדי" - עדות על הקב"ה "שם שמים מתאהב על ידך", וכשמעיד עדות שקר ח"ו ה"ז חילול השם והיפך ענינו, וחילול ה' הוא ענין חמור ביותר וכו'.

Today’s Rambam discusses the severity of giving false testimony: (1) “They are warned in the presence of all the onlookers, and made aware of the severity of giving false testimony and the shame suffered by those who give such testimony in this world and in the world to come.” This is something we don’t find in other Torah prohibitions, not even severe prohibitions punishable by stoning. (2) “If one says to another: ‘Come and stand together with the [one] witness [I already have]. You do not have to testify, but the borrower will become frightened and panic, thinking that you are two witnesses and he will admit the debt on his own volition’…With regard to this and similar matter it says: ‘Keep distant from a false word.’” False testimony is so severe even for one to even give the appearance that he is going to testify –and in a way that will bring the borrower to confess and do teshuvah – is forbidden. The reason is because the whole purpose of a Jew’s creation is to be “My witnesses” – to serve as testimony to Hashem and for “the name of Heaven to be beloved through you.” Thus, when one gives false testimony chas v’shalom, he defies the whole purpose of his creation, and desecrates Hashem’s Name – something exceedingly severe etc.
