הוראה עיקרית ממ"ש במדרש שהתינוקות, אִתָּם למד מרדכי, אמרו לו "אתך אנו" לחיים ולהיפך: העולם חושב שמטרת בית-ספר היא ללמד חכמות – חכמות סתם בבית-ספר סתם, וחכמת התורה בבית ספר דתי, אבל לא לשפר את ההנהגה ומדות, והילד יכול לצאת מבית-ספר באותן מדות בהן הוא נולד ונכנס לבית-ספר – "פרא אדם יולד"! (ואע"פ שבנוגע לתורה ישנה ההבטחה ש"המאור שבה מחזירו למוטב" – אבל זה יכול לקחת משך זמן). וזוהי טעות! אדרבה – מטרת בי"ס היא לחנך למדות טובות, אהבת ויראת ה'‏ – ‏לצעוק "אתך אנו" לחיים ולהיפך! ו"אם אין יראה – אין חכמה"! וא"ז צריך המנהל לדעת: לא משנה איזה מקצוע מלמדים‏ – ‏המטרה וההדגשה בכל צ"ל יראת ה' והנהגה ע"פ תורה! וזוהי הצרה הגדולה ב"קאַלעדש"‏ – ‏שם תובעים רק ידיעת החומר הנלמד ולא הנהגה טובה! והיום, יש להדגיש זאת גם בנוגע לישיבות: בתקופתנו, כאשר ההנהגה בבית אינה כדרוש והילד לא מקבל שם יראת-שמים, אין ברירה אלא לשוח את הילד לישיבה וכיו"ב שמיוסדת על יראת שמים!

The Midrash states that when Mordechai gathered children to teach them Torah, they said “We are with you,” whether for life or the opposite. The fundamental lesson is: The world thinks that the purpose of a school is to impart knowledge, whether ordinary knowledge in a non-Jewish school, or Torah knowledge in a religious school, without focusing on improving character and conduct. Thus, it is possible for a child to finish his schooling just as much like a “wild donkey” as when he was born! (And although regarding Torah study there is the promise that “the luminary within it will bring him back to good” – but we don’t know how long that will take.) But really the purpose of a school is to inculcate the students with positive traits, with love and fear of Hashem – so that they cry out, “We are with you,” whether for life or the opposite. And “If there is no fear, there is no wisdom.” This is what the school principal must know: No matter what subject is being taught – the goal and emphasis of it all must be fear of Hashem and conduct according to the Torah! And this is the great trouble with college: they demand only knowledge of the material, and don’t care about positive behavior. And these days, this must be emphasized regarding yeshivas as well: These days, when the conduct a child sees at home isn’t as it should be, and the child isn’t receiving fear of Hashem at home, there is no choice but to send the child to a cheder, Talmud Torah, or yeshiva that is founded on fear of heaven!
