במצוות "מחצית השקל" מצינו ב' הפכיים: מצד א'‏ – ‏"העשיר לא ירבה והדל לא ימעיט"‏ – ‏כולם נתנו בשווה "מחצית השקל", ומצד שני‏ – ‏מדגישים בזה גופא שישנו עשיר וישנו דל‏ – ‏חילוקים בבנ"י! והביאור: "מחצית השקל" הוא ענין המס"נ, וכאו"א מישראל, אפי' קל שבקלים, מוכן למסור נפשו בפועל, ולכן במעשה של נתינת "מחצית השקל" היו כולם שווים, אבל ה"מס"נ" צ"ל גם עם פנימיות הנפש, שתחדור גם את עשר כחות הנפש. ובזה ישנו חילוק: זה נותן את העשר כחות של "עשיר" וזה של "דל". ההוראה בפועל: כל יהודי הוא עבד ה' ומוסר את עצמו ורצונו להקב"ה וכו'. וענין זה, שהוא הפנימיות והעיקר, שווה בכולם. אלא שיש להשתדל שזה יחדור גם את כל עשר כחות הנפש, כ"א לפי מדרגתו.

In the mitzvah of the half-shekel, we find two opposites: On one hand – “The rich shall give no more, and the poor shall give no less” – everyone gave the same half-shekel. But on the other hand, the verse specifically emphasizes that there’s a rich person and there’s a poor person – distinctions among the Jewish people. The explanation is: the half-shekel reflects mesiras-nefesh; even the most unworthy Jew is prepared to literally sacrifice their life, and therefore when it comes to the act of giving the half-shekel, they were all equal. But mesiras-nefesh also requires the involvement of the inner dimension of the soul; it must permeate all ten faculties of the soul. And here there is a distinction: one gives the ten faculties of the “rich,” and another gives the ten faculties of the “poor.” The practical lesson is that every Jew is a servant of Hashem, surrendering himself and his will to Hashem etc. And this aspect, which is the main thing, applies equally to all. But one must also strive for this to permeate the ten faculties of the soul, each according to his level.
