What happens when an accident on the tools changes your life forever?

In Season 1, Episode 9 of Off The Job: A Tradesman Podcast, Keiran Yates and Pete Withers are joined by former roofer Geordie Flanagan for an honest and deeply personal conversation about workplace accidents, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mental health in the UK construction industry.

Geordie loved working as a roofer, but everything changed following a serious fall that left him with multiple injuries and a difficult road to recovery. He opens up about the physical and psychological impact of the accident, including how everyday sounds, such as a ladder being moved, could trigger flashbacks and anxiety.

The conversation also explores Geordie's experiences of childhood trauma, the challenges of asking for help and the support he received from his partner during some of his darkest moments.

Geordie shares the story behind We're All Ears, a mental health community he created to encourage people to open up, share their experiences and feel less alone. The project was active at the time of recording, although its current operating status has not been confirmed.

Throughout the episode, Keiran, Pete and Geordie discuss the pressures facing men working in the trades, the importance of looking out for your mates and why speaking about mental health shouldn't be seen as a weakness.

This is one of our more personal conversations from the Off The Job archives, offering an important perspective on life after a workplace accident and the challenges that aren't always visible.
