March 15, 1947. Newport Harbor, California.

When they return to the pier, the Mary E. is engulfed in flames and sinking into the harbor. Walter and Beulah are still aboard.
At first, the explosion appears to be a tragic accident. But as investigators examine the wreckage, disturbing questions begin to surface. Was it an accident, a murder-suicide, or a carefully planned double murder committed by Louise and the man she loved?
