This week on The Next Take Podcast, Canada’s own hosts Mikel and Tanyka discuss the town of Ajax, Ontario receiving $20 million from the federal government to build more affordable housing, Bell Canada laying off 4,800 employees, and the cloning of the Burlington crayfish.

the Town of Ajax continued its push to address housing demand and accelerate residential development across the community. With a provincial goal of 17,000 new housing units in Ajax by 2031, the town introduced several initiatives aimed at increasing housing supply, encouraging higher-density development and creating more diverse housing options. Federal funding through the Housing Accelerator Fund also provided nearly $22 million to help Ajax remove development barriers and fast-track hundreds of new homes. The initiative comes as Ajax and communities across Durham Region continue to face growing concerns surrounding housing availability, affordability and future population growth.

Bell Canada’s parent company, BCE Inc., announced a major restructuring that would eliminate approximately 4,800 positions, representing about 9% of its workforce. The cuts marked the company’s largest workforce restructuring initiative in nearly 30 years. The changes extended into Bell Media, alongside significant adjustments to its television and radio operations. Bell announced plans to sell 45 regional radio stations, while CTV and other Bell Media properties faced programming and staffing changes.

An unusual invasive species is raising concerns in Burlington, Ontario. The marbled crayfish has the remarkable ability to reproduce without a mate, essentially creating genetically identical clones of itself. After being detected in the wild near Burlington, experts began investigating how the species arrived and whether it could spread into surrounding waterways.
