Season 2 Episode 17
“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” - John 15:15
The Gospel of John begins a profound transformation of our understanding of and relationship to God, our relationship with life itself.
We no longer see ourselves as slaves to a taskmaster God who doles out rewards to his favorite slaves and harsh punishments to those who anger or disappoint him. We are no longer motivated by fear of eternal damnation or hope for eternal reward.
We are motivated instead by love. The relationships we have with God and with each other in God - in whom “we live and move and have our being” - are their own reward.
After work, I once hopped in the car and drove four hours to attend a friend’s surprise birthday party. I then drove four hours home. I didn’t do it because I thought he’d retaliate if I didn’t. I didn’t do it for any sort of gain. The friendship is its own reward.
When we understand that about ourselves and God, everything changes.
