Since When Did Portland’s Mexican Food Get So Good?

Published 3 years, 1 month ago
Description

Not too long ago, Mexican food in Portland was all cheddar cheese, bland sauces, and sour cream. But a new explosion of chefs is bringing more accurate and creative takes on Mexican food to our city, creating national buzz along the way.

Notably, a restaurant group, República & Co., has been opening a dizzying number of new restaurants and cafes. One of these newly opened spots, Lilia Comedor, recently won a place on Esquire magazine’s best new restaurants in America list. Today on City Cast Portland, host Claudia Meza is talking with chef Juan Gomez of Lilia Comedor (and former chef de cuisine at República) about Portland’s rising Mexican food scene.

Restaurants mentioned in the episode:

Lilia Comedor

Little Conejo

Güero

Lil’ Dame

Sahuayo in J & T Market
