Mick Willson, Gladiators’ Cobra: From Lift Engineer to TV Legend
Description
Before he was Cobra on the original Gladiators, Mick Willson was a lift engineer working in London. In Season 1, Episode 7 of Off The Job: A Tradesman Podcast, he joins Keiran, his nephew, and Pete to tell the story of how he went from the tools to one of the biggest TV shows of the 1990s.
Mick talks about being put forward for Gladiators, starting as a reserve and discovering that wearing the Cobra costume on national television was slightly more nerve-racking than he expected. He shares what the long filming days were really like, including the time he injured his ankle in front of an audience who thought it was part of the act.
There are stories from his lift engineering days, fellow Gladiators, life after the show and the less glamorous side of being recognised everywhere you go. Mick also speaks honestly about injuries, serious illness and why he is content with a quieter life now. Naturally, Keiran and Pete let absolutely none of the embarrassing family stories pass unchallenged.
