ענין שנת העיבור – לאחד שנת החמה, המאירה תמיד באופן שווה בלי שינויים, עם שנת הלבנה, שהארתה משתנה מיום ליום. ובעבודה: "חמה" מורה על תוכן הענין ד"לא תוסיפו ולא תגרעו", ו"לבנה" מורה על הענין ד"מעלין בקודש". לדוגמא – לא' יש חוש בזכרון טוב ומנצלו ל"אינו מאבד טפה", ולשני יש חוש בלחדש חידושים "לאפשא לה", וההוראה משנת העיבור היא שכ"א צריך ויכול לשמש את קונו בב' האופנים. ובנוגע למעשה בפועל: שנת העיבור מדגיש שאין לפחד ממה שתובעים ממנו ב' ענינים הפכיים יחד – מצד א' השליחות המוטלת על כ"א הוא לפעול בתוך עניני מדידה והגבלה של העולם ולא לבטלם, כמו לתת צדקה לעני כפי שיכול לקבל ולא "רוב טובה", ועד"ז בלימוד התורה יש להזהר שהלומד לא יחרוג מעבר לגבול המותר לחידושים ולחדש חידושים "שלא נאמרו למשה מסיני"... – "לא תוסיפו ולא תגרעו", וביחד עם זה תובעים ממנו שההפרשה לצדקה או לימוד התורה שלו יהי' באופן של למעלה ממדוה"ג – "בכל מאודך"! וב' הענינים צ"ל במסירות נפש באופן שווה!

A leap year merges the year based on the sun (which is the same every year), and the year of the moon (which changes every day). In terms of Divine service, the “sun” represents that which doesn’t change, “You shall not add nor diminish,” while the “moon” represents the idea of “ascending in holiness.” For example, one person may have an exceptional memory he uses to “not lose a drop,” while another may excel at coming up with novel ideas, “increasing in it”; the leap year teaches that everyone can and must serve his Maker in both ways. Practically speaking: the leap year emphasizes that one should not be afraid of the fact that two opposite things are demanded of him at the same time: On the one hand, one must “not add nor diminish,” that is, one must operate within the confines and limits of the world and not nullify them, for example, by giving tzedakah in a way the pauper can accept it, and similarly, in the context of Torah study, making sure not so far in “innovating” novel ideas that he comes up with things that were “not said to Moshe from Sinai.” At the same time, one’s tzedakah and Torah learning must go beyond measure and limitation – it must be “with all your might.” And both forms of service must be performed with the same mesiras-nefesh.
