הסדר בחינוך הילדים הוא שכל לראש צ"ל היסודות – 1) הקשר עם אלקות ויהדות, 2) המשכת קדושה בחיי היום-יום ע"י קיום המצוות, ורק לאח"ז – 3) "מציאות" של תורה. בדורות הקודמים היו הילדים מקבלים בבית את היסודות, ומה שנשאר עבור ה"חדרים" ו"ישיבות" הי' רק הענין הג' – ידיעת התורה. אבל בימינו אלו מקבלים הישיבות את הילדים בלי יסודות אלו – הרי תפקידה של הישיבה לבנות אותם מן ה"יסוד" עד ה"גג" ואא"פ לבנות "כתלים" ו"קומה ע"ג קומה" וכו' לפני שמעמידים את היסוד. היינו, לכל לראש לעורר בהם את האמונה בה' ונקודת היהדות, ולאח"ז לומר להם ש"יהדות" צריכה להתבטא בקיום מצוות מעשיות בחיי היום-יום. התורה יכולה להיות לדבר המזיק לאדם הלומד אותה ללא יסודות אלו! משיחת י' שבט ה'תשט"ו

Jewish education must begin with the foundations: (1) Establishing the connection to G-dliness and Yiddishkeit; (2) drawing holiness into the child’s daily life by performing the mitzvos; (3) becoming a Torah entity. In previous generations, children received the foundations at home; what remained for the cheders and yeshivahs was only to impart the third step – Torah knowledge. But these days, students come into the yeshivah lacking these foundations; therefore, the task of the yeshiva is to build them up from the “foundation” up to the “roof.” Without first building the foundation, it’s impossible to add walls and floors. Therefore, the first thing is to awaken within the students the essential spark of Yiddishkeit within them, and the belief in Hashem – and then to tell them that Yiddishkeit must be expressed through the practical mitzvos in daily life. Otherwise, Torah can become harmful to one who studies it without these foundations. [To be continued.]
