כאשר אדה"ז קרא לאברך שילמד את בנו, אדהאמ"צ, ושאל אותו האברך כיצד ללמד אתו, השיב לו אדה"ז (בניגון הידוע): עם ילד מתחילים ללמוד אל"ף בי"ת. מהו אל"ף? – נקודה למעלה ונקודה למטה, יו"ד מלמעלה שהיא הנשמה, ויו"ד מלמטה שהוא הגוף, וע"י הקו של יראת שמים באמצע – מתחברים ונעשים דבר אחד. ועוד רמז בזה, שהיו"ד מלמעלה קאי על הקב"ה שלמעלה ממדידה והגבלה, וכדי שהיו"ד מלמטה, היהודי, יוכל להתחבר עם הקב"ה, ה"ז ע"י העדר תפיסת מקום (כמו נקודה), וע"י הקו של יראת שמים, ביטול במציאות, ה"ה מתחבר עם הקב"ה ונעשה אות א'. וזהו גם ענין האל"ף דמתן תורה, שהאות הראשונה היא אל"ף, וזה צ"ל היסוד והתחת הלימוד עם ילד יהודי, ועי"ז יהי' לו את הכח שכאשר יגדל ויתעסק עם עניני העולם – שבכ"מ יורגש "אנכי ה' אלקיך".

When the Alter Rebbe hired a young scholar to teach his son the Mitteler Rebbe, the young man asked the Alter Rebbe how to teach him. The Alter Rebbe replied (in his famous sing-song voice): We begin by teaching a child the Aleph-Beis; what is an Aleph? A dot above and a dot below, a Yud above, which is the soul, and a Yud below, which is the body – and through the line of fear of Heaven in the middle, they become one. Another allusion here is that the Yud above represents Hashem, Who transcends measure and limitation, and the Yud below represents the Jew. To connect with Hashem, a Jew must make himself humble like a “dot,” taking up no space; through this “line” of fear of Heaven and self-nullification, he connects to Hashem and becomes an Aleph. And this is also the Aleph of the giving of the Torah: the first letter of the Ten Commandments is an Aleph, and it must be the foundation and essence of a child’s education. In this way, when the child grows up and goes out into the world, he will have the ability to cause “I am Hashem your G-d” to be felt all around him.
