קודם מ"ת היתה "גזירה" (נתק) בין העליונים ותחתונים‏ – ‏"העליונים לא ירדו למטה והתחתונים לא יעלו למעלה", ובשעת מ"ת נתבטלה הגזירה, "ואני המתחיל"‏ – ‏"וירד הוי' על הר סיני" [כמ"ש בשישי דפ' יתרו] – ‏הקב"ה, העליון שאין למעלה ממנו, ירד בעצמו לתחתונים! וזוהי ההוראה לדרך בה "לוקחים" את התורה ומלמדים אותה: דוקא במקום נמוך, ובזמן ומקום הגלות, מתגלה התורה בכל התוקף! ולכן נמשלה התורה ל"מים" ש"יורדים ממקום גבוה למקום נמוך", וזהו גם מ"ש "כל המקיים את התורה מעוני", בלי ישות וגבהות, "סופו לקיימה מעושר"‏ – ‏עשירות בתורה ובשאר ענינים!

Before the giving of the Torah, there was a decree (a divide) between the higher and lower realms: “The higher beings shall not descend below, and the lower beings shall not ascend above.” But when the Torah was given, the decree was annulled, “and I will the One to go first” – “And Hashem descended upon Mount Sinai” [as it says in shishi of Parashas Yisro]. Hashem, the Highest Being, above Whom there is none other, descends Himself to the lowest world! This teaches us how to receive the Torah and how to teach it to others: it is specifically in a low place, and in a time and place of exile, that the Torah is revealed in all its strength! Therefore, the Torah is compared to water, that “descends from a high place to a low place,” and as the Mishna states, “One who keeps the Torah out of poverty,” i.e., without arrogance or ulterior motives, “will ultimately keep it out of wealth” – wealth in Torah as well as everything else.
