“It was kind of a bike, a mountain bike community but not a running community at all. And I just thought, you know, it'd be cool to put on a trail race out here. It'd be a cool way to kind of immerse myself in the sport a little bit more and kind of give back.”
Devin VansCoy fell in love with trail running and the community. He wanted to immerse himself even more and so he started organizing races. It started with his stage race, stage race, and now includes “Elevated Trail Racing”, which is a series of four more races. He’s enjoyed creating courses and bringing runners to a few small Oregon towns. The amount of work that goes into race directing has been eye-opening but Devin finds it’s all worth it once race day rolls around. The opportunity to be with the community that he loves so much is his favourite part of it all.
“My favorite part by far of race directing is the race itself, having them come in and getting their bibs and having them be all happy and excited for the race and then having them come in and finish and share a beer with them. You know, just the social aspect that trail racing has after the race.”
Devin’s races sound like a lot of fun, he doesn’t have any cutoffs during his events and keeps them open until everyone is done, and he loves sharing a celebratory drink of any type at the finish line with runners. I hope you enjoy the conversation, I certainly did, and let us know what you think!
